VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps have cleared many hurdles in their four Major League Soccer seasons. Padres Phil Maton Jersey . One hedge that has continually tripped them up is playing the L.A. The Whitecaps (2-1-2) are aware of the challenge they face when they play the Galaxy (1-1-1) Saturday in Carson, Calif. The team is packing a sense of confidence for the road trip. The Whitecaps have managed a win and tie against the Galaxy at B.C. Place Stadium. Saturdays game is another chance to measure themselves against one of MLSs perennial powerhouses. "Both sides have good competitors," said Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit. "Them being one of the better teams its a time for us to raise our game and really test ourselves and see how good we are. "That creates that battle sense." The Whitecaps are coming off their first defeat of the season, a 2-1 home loss to the Colorado Rapids last week. Vancouver led 1-0 but, playing one man down, gave up two goals in as many minutes to Rapids midfielder Jose Mari. "Those things happen and you move on," said DeMerit. "Knowing the calibre of team we are up against this weekend, that should excite us. That should take our focus and make sure we are preparing right. If we do the right things we can beat anyone in this league." The Whitecaps will be without midfielder Matias Laba who is suspended after picking up two yellow cards against Colorado. He could be replaced by Nigel Reo-Coker who missed two games after tripping over a bike rack and bashing his head. The 29-year-old from London was back practising with the team this week sporting an ugly scar on his head and a desire to get back on the pitch. "Im excited," said Reo-Coker, who started the first three games of the season. "When you sit out and watch one or two games its not nice. "Im someone who is used to competing." DeMerit said Reo-Coker makes the Whitecaps more abrasive. "Nigel brings a grit, he brings competitiveness, he brings a toughness in the tackle," he said. "He can really help us going forward when he gets the ball at this feet and drives at the defence." The Whitecaps have been a tale of two teams this year. Both their wins have come at home where they have outscored their opponents 7-4 in three matches. On the road Vancouver has managed two draws and just one goal. Robinson relishes the challenge the Galaxy present. "Were a young evolving team," said the first-year head coach. "It will be a good test to see where we are. "Its important we go on the road and try and dictate what we can, control ourselves, deal with them attacking wisely but putting a focus on us attacking." The Galaxy won their first match of the season with a 3-0 defeat of Chivas USA last week. Captain Robbie Keane scored his second goal of the season in the match. Keane has 36 goals and 22 assists in 58 MLS games since joining the Galaxy in 2011. Forward Landon Donovan needs just one goal to reach 135. That would make him the MLS all-time regular-season leader in goals scored. Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted said he doesnt want to be the answer to a trivia question. "It would be nice not to be that guy," said Ousted. "I am trying to keep a clean sheet so it doesnt matter who scores." Donovan has scored four goals against the Whitecaps, the most of any L.A. player. Keane and Donovan combine for a dangerous one-two punch, but defender Andy OBrien said its dangerous to focus on them because the Galaxy have plenty of other players able to deliver a knockout blow. "If you emphasize on Keane there are 11 players on the pitch," said OBrien, who has been a teammate with Keane on the Irish national team. "Not only does Robbie score goals he creates goals. "We need to close him down. He is one of a number of players theyve got that can score goals. From a defensive prospective you try to make life difficult for him and stick to it." DeMerit agreed the Whitecaps cant become too focused on just two Galaxy players. "One of their best qualities is they have a lot of interchangeable parts," he said. "You will see guys on the left end up on the right and guys in the centre on the left. "Guys have to make sure they are sticking with their jobs and their spots on the field. They are going to try to get us moving and change around. In his sophomore CFL campaign Sheets was second in league rushing with 1,598 yards and a gaudy 5.6 yards per carry average and 12 touchdowns.  His Grey Cup performance will also be remembered in Saskatchewan – and Hamilton, albeit much less fondly – for years to come. The 29-year-old will be preparing for NFL training camp in Oakland when the Roughriders begin their title defence, and while hes in tough to make the Raiders roster, the best case scenario for Saskatchewan is a return sometime around Labour Day. Another Roughriders mainstay and fan favourite Durant will no longer have at his disposal is slight receiver Weston Dressler. The 57 slotback was a 1,000-yard receiver in five of his six CFL seasons, falling just 59 yards short in his sophomore campaign, and scored a combined 45 touchdowns. Durant and Dresslers time in Saskatchewan had coincided, the two emerging together in 2008. But now the favourite target is in Kansas City with no guarantee of returning. So this year Durant enters the unquestioned leader on offence, and with more unknowns on the roster than previous seasons, hell have to shoulder a greater load. The good news of course is that the cupboard isnt completely bare. While Dresslers sure hands and elusiveness will be missed in the receiving corps, two other pass catchers, ones still on the roster, eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark as well last season in Chris Getzlaf, who led the team with 1,045, and Taj Smith, who hit the mark in just his second season. And if Rob Bagg can stay healthy all year, that will be another receiver for Durant to lean on. The running back position is much more of a toss-up heading into the season. The team has five RBs with a combined two carries CFL experience (Clifton Smith, which he gained with the Calgary Stampeders last season). But the last time they tried to replace a solid veteran running back, Wes Cates in 2012, they found a guy who would one day lead them to a Grey Cup victory at home.. Matt Ryan Jersey. So, theres hope. Things could work out around Durant; he may have a support staff as talented as the one hoisting the Grey Cup alongside him last year. But the inexperience and uncertainty heading into the season alone means hell have to do even more as both a leader and performer to keep the Roughriders in Grey Cup contention. The football crazy fans in Saskatchewan already love their veteran quarterback; if he can elevate his game and bring more success to the province, theyll cherish him even more. Notes Expansion Draft Roughriders fans were surprised to see DT Keith Shologan get picked by the Ottawa Redblacks in the national portion of the expansion draft after the veteran spent the past six seasons in Saskatchewan. Ottawa also grabbed Shologans backup in Zack Evans one round later, it being evident the Roughriders were making a ratio change. OT James Lee was Saskatchewans international loss in the draft. Coach of the YearIn his second season as head coach of the Roughriders, Corey Chamblin had a dream year. He led Saskatchewan to a scorching start to the season before guiding them to a Grey Cup win in front of a boisterous hometown crowd. Chamblin was awarded in the off-season with the leagues Coach of the Year award, beating out former Roughriders coach Kent Austin. Free Agency The Roughriders lost a lot more talent in free agency than they signed back. Notable losses included S Craig Butler, LBs Abraham Kromah and Graig Newman, WR Kierre Johnson, RB Jock Sanders, and QB Drew Willy, not to mention Kory Sheets and Weston Dressler who are now in the NFL. The team did lock up some of their pending free agents however, including DBs Paul Woldu and Terrell Maze, and WR Taj Smith. CFL DraftThe Roughriders traded out of the first round, stock piling picks later in the draft. With their first pick in the second round the team landed CFL Combine star Dylan Ainsworth, a DL from Western, before also grabbing WR Alex Pierzchalski from Toronto. Saskatchewan also had two picks in the third round, nabbing John Mark from Calgary and WR Kristopher Bastien from Concordia. Their remaining picks included DB Matt Webster from Queens and OL Kyle Paterson from Regina in the fifth round, LB Travis Bent from Concordia in the sixth round, and OL Terry Hart from St. Francis Xavier in the seventh round. The club has won its last three games and Winnipeg can post its second four-game winning streak of the Maurice era with another victory tonight. The surge has helped move Winnipeg within two points of a playoff spot in the West. Washington, meanwhile, has damaged its playoff chances in recent weeks, although it does enter Thursdays tilt only three points out of a postseason spot in the East. The Capitals have lost three of their last four games and are just 3-7-3 over their past 13 outings. The Caps, who until this season were in the same division as the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, have won five straight in this series against their former Southeast Division rivals. That run includes a 5-4 shootout win in Winnipeg on Oct. 22 when Alex Ovechkin recorded two goals and an assist for Washington. The Jets had a three-game winning streak in D.C. snapped when the Capitals posted a 5-3 home win on April 23 of last season. Montreal played uninspired hockey for the better part of three periods in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. Yeah, Harvick kind of likes it here in the desert. Disappointed at the Daytona 500 after a last-lap crash, Harvick bounced back quickly by charging to the front and dominating the rest of the way Sunday to win consecutive races at PIR with different teams. "Man, this is awesome," Harvick said. Harvick won the fall race after Carl Edwards ran out of fuel at the white flag. He needed no help Sunday. Harvick had the fastest car in practice and kept it rolling in the race, charging to the front after starting 13th and pretty much staying there. He led 224 of 312 laps on the odd-shaped mile oval and pulled away on several late restarts for his fifth NASCAR Sprint Cup victory at PIR, passing Jimmie Johnson for the most at the track. Not bad for someone whos still trying to feel his way around with a new team and new crew chief Rodney Childers. "It took long enough," SHR co-owner Gene Haas joked. "This phenomenal. I think there was a lot of skepticism last year about what myself and Tony (Stewart) what we were up to, was there a lot of madness to this. Quite frankly, its a great team, theres a lot of synergy at the shop, people working together. I dont know what we did, but I think we put together a great organization." Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second, pole sitter Brad Keselowski was third and Penske Racing teammate Joey Logano fourth. Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five on a warm and partly cloudy day after downpours wiped out the final 32 laps of Saturdays Nationwide race, won by Kyle Busch Harvick won at Phoenix during the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship in the fall, giving him an outside shot at catching Johnson for the series title in his final season with Richard Childress Racing. He came up short, but the victory and a third-place finish in the standings gave him a bit of momentum heading into for his first season with Stewart-Haas. Harvick had a solid finish in his sights at Daytona last week before a last-lap crash dropped him to 13th. At Phoenix, Harvick just missed the final stage of knockout qualifying, nipped by 0.001 seconds, but had the fastest car in Saturday mornings final practice session. He had no trouble making his way through the field after the green flag dropped in the race, passing Keselowski on the apron, then Logano for the lead on lap 74. Harvick maintained the lead coming out of green-flag pit stops with just under 200 laps left and again with about 70 laps left. A series of cautions came out late in the race and Harvick easily pulled away each time to earn a quick win with SHR a nice capper to his anniversary weekend with wife DeLana. "Im just the lucky guy who gets to drive around the race track when they have dialed in like they did today," Harvick said. "We were able to put it altogether." Earnhardt had a whirlwind week after winning his second Daytona 500, needing his girlfriend to get him extra clothes while he went on a media tour. He had a solid follow-up, putting the distractions aside to qualify fifth. Earnhardt worked his way up in the opening third of the race, passing Logano and Keselowski to pull up behind Harvick. He dropped back a couple times and fought back to get Harvick within his sights again, but didnt have enough to track him down. "Ive got to congratulate Kevin. Those guys were two-tenths faster than everyone all weekend in practice. They were just phenomenal," Earnhardt said. "To be able to run with them all day was a big confidence builder for us." NASCARs new knockout qualifying system made its Sprint Cup debut at Phoenix and Keselowski came out on top, edging Logano for his fourth career pole. Not long after that, Keselowski found out he would be without his crew chief for the race; Paul Wolfe left the desert back to North Carolina for the birth of his first child. With team engineer Brian Wilson and its Nationwide Series competition director Greg Erwin at the helm, Keselowski ran near the front all day, but, like everyone else, didnt have the speed to keep up with Harvick. "They beat everybody before they came to the track today," Keselowski said. "Its a great combination. They were prepared for the weekend. To me, Randy Childers is like a rubber-stamp, carbon-copy of Paul Wolfe. Richards, 34, has been a productive scorer throughout his career, but that productivity has waned as he approaches his mid-thirties. While he finished with a respectable 51 points in 82 games last season, that 0.62 points per game represented a career low and the second-lowest rate of his career was in 2012-2013, when he had 0.74 points per game. The downward trend is pretty clear at this point. He played 18:40 per game last season, his lowest average time on ice since his rookie season in 2000-2001. Given the massive contract that Richards had with the New York Rangers (nine years, $60-million), and the new recapture penalties that were imposed in the latest collective bargaining agreement, the Rangers had little choice but to buy out Richards, after paying him $33-million for the first three years of his deal. A long and productive career leaves Richards with few needs financially, so he went into his newfound free agency looking for a good fit and settled on joining the Blackhawks, a Stanley Cup contender who could use an upgrade at their second-line centre spot. In the past couple years, even as his point production has started to fall, Richards has had his zone starts tilted towards the offensive zone, with more than 65% of his shifts starting in the offensive zone. As a result, hes had strong possession stats, which may be enough to suggest that, eveen in decline, in a sheltered role, Richards would be an upgrade on Michal Handzus as Chicagos number two centre. Samson Ebukam Jersey. In Chicago, there is a good opportunity for Richards to have a productive year. Any combination of the Blackhawks top scoring wingers includes Patrick Sharp, Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad, so playing with two of them ought to give Richards a chance to have decent even-strength production. Whether Richards can match last seasons scoring totals, however, probably will have some dependence on power play production and, over the past couple seasons, Richards has really struggled to produce with the man advantage. Furthermore, Richards presence likely means that top Blackhawks prospect Teuvo Teravainen wont be starting the season in Chicago and that may be fine for his overall development, but if Teravainen shows that hes ready, it would be easy enough to see Richards bumped down the depth chart, as has happened from time to time with the Rangers over the past couple seasons. There is a benefit to the contract that Richards signed with Chicago -- a one-year, $2-million deal -- in that his declining production in New York was frequently contrasted with how much money the Rangers had tied up to get him. Now, Richards is a bargain signing and if he gives Chicago decent second-line production, he would bring a positive return on investment. Unfortunately the close proximity to the ocean didnt quite register with one of the girls (I cant say who, shell kill me!), and after one particularly tough session, she wistfully asked if we were at altitude… FINE!  The picturesque surrounds of Montego Bays Trelawney Stadium Dishing out team fines is something we enjoy doing throughout the duration of tour - basically a fines master is appointed, and they are then responsible for collating an ongoing list of embarrassing moments or daft comments for each player and member of our support staff. On the last night of tour we gather as a big group to go through them all. It helps to keep things light-hearted and maybe stop people being stupid - even the management!In good spirits and ready to go, we played a warm-up game against a Jamaica womens representative XI ahead of our first ODI, which featured some excellent contributions from Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt.  Our preparation block at the National Cricket Performance Centre leading into this tour has so far proven to be spot on. All the talk back in Loughborough was about being able to play on slow, low, turning pitches and making game plans to enable us to negate the threat of spinners and how to score runs with low risk options. So far, the pitches we have played on for first two ODIs were exactly that although with 9.30am starts out here, there was a little more help for the seam bowlers early in the morning.The first ODI was perhaps one of the best games of cricket I have ever been involved in. The game ebbed and flowed, momentum shifted in the space of a few balls and true to the universal law of low-scoring games there was an exciting finish - with an exceptional spell of bowling from Katherine Brunt to give us the victory.Unfortunately, it wasnt to be in our second ODI where in another low scoring game we fancied ourselves to chase 149, especially when we were so well positioned at 90-3.  However, as in the first clash, momentum changed very quickly and after a devastating spell of bowling from Deandra Dottin we found ourselves all out for 110. We managed to nearly fill one of the large stands for the first ODI with England fans (staying in the same hotel as us for a big family wedding!) who wholeheartedly took on the vuvuzelas of the West Indian fans and created one of the best atmospheres for us to play in front of. Although there were probably only 300 people in the ground it felt like 3,000!Back at the hotel the staff have been fantastic, always so friendly even though they were supporting the West Indians. Although Im pretty sure for the first few days they were trying to slip some rum in our banana smoothies to throw us off our game!We have been caught in a few tropical storms over here resulting in some proper rain! I have been rooming with Jenny Gunn who is normally petrified of storms but I ran back to the room to check on her and she was playing photographer extraordinaire out on the balcony lapping up the slow-mo feature on her phone and filming crazy videos! She said the heat must have been getting to her! We join England Women on their tour bus as they prepare for the final three ODIs of their series against West Indies. We are off to Kingston now for the remainder of our series and for the three ODIs which also carry ICC Womens Championship points - the qualification competition for the ICC Womens World Cup in England next year. DENVER -- For one night, the conversation wasnt all about rookie sensation Yasiel Puig. Authentic Drew Doughty Jersey . But Clayton Kershaw accomplished what few have been able to do lately -- he stole some of Puigs spotlight. Kershaw (7-5) kept the Rockies off balance all night, even top hitter Michael Cuddyer, who had his franchise-record 27-game hitting streak halted after going hitless in four plate appearances. Cuddyer flied out to Puig in right to end the game. "If it was going to end, might as well end against the best pitcher in the league," Cuddyer said. "He pitched really well. He was tough tonight." So tough that he allowed just one runner to get to second all evening. The hard-throwing Kershaw had eight strikeouts and walked none. "I had pretty good fastball command tonight," he nonchalantly said. Asked about the offence and his face lit up as he pedaled on the exercise bike after the game. "Its awesome," Kershaw said. "Its a tough lineup right now to get through. Puigs on another planet. You keep thinking he cant keep this up, not just singles, hes been hitting the ball really hard everywhere. Ive been really, really impressed." Its hard not to be. The 22-year-old Puig had three more hits, including a solo homer, to raise his average to .443 this season. "Whatever league that Im in Im going to do the best I can," he said through a translator. "Im going to play wherever they ask me to play." Kershaw found himself in a rather unfamiliar position -- with a big early lead. He entered the game with the second-lowest run support of any NL starter. But the Dodgers gave Kershaw an early four-run cushion, more than enough for him. It was Kershaws third complete game of the season and second shutout. He held the San Francisco Giants without a run in his first start of the season on April 1. Kershaw might have had the play of the game against the Rockies -- or at least the most comical -- when he lost his glove trying to field a bunt. No matter, he picked it up barehanded and threw out Josh Rutledge. "He had his A game, no question," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "It was going to be tough to score off of him. He was at the top of his game and when he is, you have to scratch and claw for everything." The fans showed up early to watch Puig send one monster shot after another into the stands during batting practice. Puig was even more impressive once the game began. These days, its hard not to take notice of Puig. His 44 hits in June were a Dodgers rookie record for a month. He carried it over into July with a single in the first and a double off the right-field scoreboard in the third. After taking a called third strike, Puig sent a pitch from reliever Adam Ottavino over the fence in the deepest part of the park for his eighth homer this season. Puig wasnt done there. He also made a running catch in foul territory, veering right for the seats before suddenly turning to avoid a collision. He then trotted into the dugout as if it were just another routine play. "Exciting player. Big guy with a lot of athleticism," Weiss said before the game. "Brought a lot of excitement to that club." The same can be said of Cuddyer, who failed to get a hit for the first time since May 27. His streak was the longest in the majors this season. Cuddyer didnt reach base, either, bringing his streak of 46 straight games with a hit, walk or being plunked by a pitch to an end. "Im proud of (the streak)," Cuddyer said. "Hes at a point where weve got to find out where he is game-wise and also body and mind," Trotz said of Rinne. The Predators start a five-game home stand Thursday night hosting Tampa Bay just four points back of the Western Conferences eighth and final playoff spot with 23 games remaining. They missed the playoffs last year for only the second time in nine seasons. How quickly Rinne rejoins them depends on how he fares in Milwaukee. Rinne practiced with the Predators on Wednesday before travelling to Milwaukee, and he called this a big day with doctors giving him the green light for the latest step in his long recovery. The Blue Jays technically went 9-7 in Reyes absence but he was a non-factor on Opening Day, reinjuring the hamstring that gave him trouble during spring training while running to first base in his lead off at-bat. In fact, when Reyes took his shortstop position on Saturday afternoon it was his first time in the field this season. For manager John Gibbons, who been able to field his preferred lineup far too infrequently since the start of last year, the return of Reyes means an opportunity to reset the lineup. "Its the way its supposed to look," said Gibbons. "Hopefully he gets us going a little bit more. He adds a little bit more offence. Its good to have him back." RW Rick Nash can take some heat for his playoff performance, when he scored one goal and five points in 12 games, but his 0.95 points per game during the regular season was his second-best in the last seven years and was a career-best plus-16 in 44 games. Since 2003-2004, Nash has scored 293 goals, ranking fifth, and hes still just 29-years-old, so he fits as a top-five right winger, likely going in the first couple rounds of most drafts. Coming off a breakout season, in which he scored 44 points in 48 games, C Derek Stepan is still looking for a new contract, but presuming that he gets into the Rangers lineup, the 23-year-old has to be considered a valuable fantasy commodity. In the last three seasons, Stepan is one of 15 forwards to have 140 points and a plus-40 rating and hes just hitting his prime. Captain Ryan Callahan has scored 109 goals over the last five seasons, ranking 46th, and is perennially among the league leaders in hits, but hes also recovering from off-season shoulder surgery and is not expected to be ready for the start of the season. In three seasons (well, 169 games) D Ryan McDonagh is one of five defencemen to have at least 50 points and a plus-50 rating. Even if hes not a huge scorer, as a No. 3 fantasy defencemen, hes a fine option. With a little more offence to his game, D Michael Del Zotto has 62 points over the last two seasons, ranking 21st among defencemen. Again, as a No. 3 defenceman, he offers good value. Value Plays: Much-maligned for his playoff performance, when he was a healthy scratch with the Rangers season on the line, C Brad Richards is looking for a fresh start with a new coach and while the 33-year-old isnt likely to return to point-per-game scoring, he can do better than the careeer-low 0. Cris Carter Jersey. 4 points per game he had last season. As a high-end No. 3 centre, Richards could be a savvy pick. LW Carl Hagelin has been an effective complementary scorer in his first two NHL seasons, scoring 62 points in 112 games but, like Callahan, hes recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and isnt expected to be ready for the start of the season. However, once hes healthy, Hagelin is a good bet to have a spot in the top six. The Rangers have a couple more defencemen that can provide value, in large part because they play so much. Dan Girardi has topped out at 31 points in a season, yet hes a valuable blueliner in leagues that count hits and blocked shots since hes recorded 686 hits and 726 blocks over the last four seasons. Marc Staals career-high is 29 points and hes coming off a serious eye injury, but if hes playing 24 minutes a night, as he was before getting hurt, he could be productive enough to have fantasy value. Sleepers/Breakthrough: After arriving in New York last season, as part of the return for Marian Gaborik, Derick Brassard scored 23 points in 25 (regular season plus playoff) games, a decided improvement on several seasons of disappointing production in Columbus. If he gets utilized with offensive linemates -- not easy with Stepan and Richards on the depth chart -- Brassard could push for a career-best season. LW Mats Zuccarello returned to the Rangers following a season in the KHL, tallying 15 points in 27 (regular season plus playoff) games. With Hagelin out to start the year, that could be the opening that Zuccarello needs to secure a spot on a scoring line right from the start.   Rookies: LW Chris Kreider is full of potential, even if his 2012-2013 season was a bit of a bust with 23 points in 48 AHL games and three points in 23 games with the Rangers. Kreider will have a new opportunity to earn more playing time and if he uses his size and speed, he could be a productive complementary winger. The Rangers also have Swedish forwards Oscar Lindberg and Jesper Fasth and Danny Kristo, acquired from Montreal, as prospects that could earn their way into a regular spot in the lineup, but they wont have value until they arrive.
