IIT Gandhinagar was founded in 2008 and is located in Chandkheda, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Ahmedabad is one of the oldest living cities in India, known both for a rich cultural past as well as state-of-the-art infrastructure, thriving industries, and many modern amenities. It is also the hub of prestigious academic and research institutes, such as the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and the National Institute of Design. IIT Gandhinagar offers 4-year BTech and MTechprogrammes in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Materials Science and Engineering. It also offers 2-year MSc programmes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Cognitive Science, and a 2-year MA programme in Society and Culture. Construction of the initial phase of IITGN's permanent campus on the banks of the Sabarmati river near Palaj, Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, is currently in its advanced stages. The Institute plans to move to its permanent campus in the second half of 2015.
