PHILADELPHIA - The family of the late NFL star Junior Seau plans to object to the proposed US$765 million settlement of player concussion claims because the fund would not pay wrongful death claims to survivors. Danielle Hunter Jersey . Although the players lawsuits accused the NFL of concealing known concussion risks, there would be no blame assessed as part of the settlement, and no punitive damages for pain and suffering. "Mr. Seaus children have their own claims for the wrong the NFL did to them. His children are not suing for their fathers pain and suffering, they are suing for their own," lawyer Steven M. Strauss wrote in a court filing Friday that signalled the familys intent to pursue an individual lawsuit. Other potential critics to the settlement reached by players lawyers and the league are also starting to emerge — and the judge overseeing the case has herself expressed doubts the sum is big enough. About 50 plaintiffs lawyers met in New York last week to learn more about the settlement from the lead lawyers, but some left dissatisfied. "This could be a great settlement, this could be a terrible settlement, but I dont know," said Chicago lawyer Thomas A. Demetrio, who represents 10 players, including the family of the late Dave Duerson, a four-time Pro Bowler who mostly played with the Chicago Bears. Duerson fatally shot himself in the chest, leaving his brain intact for autopsy. Like Seau, he was diagnosed with CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy. An honours graduate and trustee of the University of Notre Dame, he was 50 when he died, which would factor into his familys payout. "His estate will receive $2.2 million. Thats not adequate," Demetrio said. U.S. District Judge Anita Brody, who must weigh the deal, also wants more actuarial details than filed with the settlement papers. She preliminarily rejected the plan last month, questioning whether $765 million will be enough to fund about 20,000 claims involved for 65 years, as promised. The architects of the plan argue that the players could end up with nothing if the lawsuits are thrown out of court. The NFL had argued that the claims belonged in arbitration. The retirees would also have to prove their injuries came from NFL concussions, and not those suffered earlier. "The retired player community has provided overwhelming support for this agreement, and we look forward to finalizing it soon so they can begin taking advantage of its benefits," lead lawyers Christopher Seeger and Sol Weiss said in a statement Monday that recognized the work of other lawyers on the case. The NFL settlement, if approved in court, would be capped at $4 million on behalf of players diagnosed after their deaths with traumatic brain injury. The payments could go as high as $5 million for younger men with Alzheimers disease, but many more plaintiffs with mild dementia would get $25,000 or less under the deal. Demetrio wants to know how much of the NFLs payment will come from insurance, and why the lawyers would split another $112 million, when the case did not reach discovery or trial. The NFLs annual revenues top $9 billion. "Its very, very unusual ... for all the plaintiffs to not know whats going on," Demetrio said. "Theyre acting like the Lone Ranger." The Seau Family, meanwhile, is also concerned that the deal calls for a stay on individual suits until all appeals are finalized with the settlement. The Leafs arent willing to pay him what he will lure on the open market and based on the demand for blueliners with a right-handed shot, Franson will fetch a decent trade return once its been determined he intends to walk. And that decision should be soon. Forwards Daniel Winnik and Mike Santorelli (also pending UFAs) are drawing interest from trade circles as well and given Torontos play of late, the list of available Leaf players is starting to grow. While never impossible, any trade involving a key player is unlikely until the off-season, when other cap teams have more flexibility to take on bigger contracts. Again - anything is possible. However, Torontos expected return seems fairly specific as the Leafs are looking for good young roster players in their early twenties. Montreal Canadiens The Habs have faced adversity this season, but keep on finding ways to win and remain a top team in the Eastern Conference. A sagging power play has regained some spark and when healthy, Carey Price has performed at his usual elite standard. Trying to nail general manager Marc Bergevin down on divulging internal secrets is a near futile exercise, but he talks to enough people around the league to surmise hes not satisfied with how his team looks. And if he can add a forward to strengthen his top two lines, he will. Bergevin is also believed to be looking for a defenceman - perhaps an upgrade to whats already considered a decent top five. Ottawa Senators Wayne Scanlan of The Ottawa Citizen wrote an excellent piece this week on Senators GM Bryan Murray and by Murrays own admission, this will very likely be his last season at the helm. Murray likes what he sees on this years roster and still believes Ottawa has a chance, though the standings are continuing to paint a different picture. Its believed Murray would also like to add a top six forward - an established player with some term remaining to give the Senators some stability. Trevor Siemian Jersey. Acquiring such a player is hard to do, though Murray found a way when winger Bobby Ryan was brought into town. While some believe it might be better for the Sens to wait and allow the younger players to develop, Murrays more immediate concern is his lack of roster space. Mark Borowiecki is very close to returning, which will force Ottawa to make a tough decision. Its likely that Colin Greening will be placed on waivers to open a spot. Meanwhile, the uncertainty of Marc Methots future continues to hang over the club as well. A pending UFA, Methot complements captain Erik Karlsson and is playing well. If a contract extension cant be worked out, Methot will likely be traded - which would create a large hole on Ottawas blue line. Given the spot duty assigned to veteran defenceman Chris Phillips (who has been a healthy scratch eight times this season), perhaps Murray finds a new home for a proud man who cant be happy with his limited role. All of this makes for difficult decisions for Bryan Murray and his management team to ponder. Winnipeg Jets The Jets appear to be a throwback example of hard work and chemistry paying off. Head coach Paul Maurice says he never goes to the rink concerned about how hard his team is willing to work. And it shows, as the Jets are highly regarded as one of the most difficult teams to play against. Comfortably in a playoff spot, no one in this organization is taking anything for granted. And this Jets team knows that the post All-Star grind will demand a high level of intestinal fortitude to secure that spot. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has assets he can dangle in a trade - particularly from his defence corps. The Jets would like to add a third line right winger, but given the play of this team, Cheveldayoff might consider something more significant to bolster his chances against the Western Conferences big boys. The Jets wont mortgage their future, but if they continue to string wins together and find a way to creep into the Top 10, there will be some interesting boardroom conversations leading up to the deadline. Vancouver Canucks The Canucks continue to quietly go about their business and with far less drama than weve seen in recent years. The team is where they thought they would be at the beginning of the season - in the playoff mix, but fighting to distance themselves from the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings. Now Vancouver needs scoring and the team is hopeful that the right deal will materialize to add a second line forward. Dont expect GM Jim Benning to dive into the rental pool, as the Canucks have no intention of blowing out the young talent theyve accumulated over the last couple of seasons to acquire a player destined for free agency. And the rumour mill keeps linking the Canucks to Boston, given the obvious history Benning has as the Bruins former assistant GM. Calgary Flames Remarkably, the Flames remain one of the NHLs pleasant surprises this season. Approaching the 50-game mark, they are a playoff team, while the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings are not. Yes, its hard to believe. Head coach Bob Hartley has developed a winning culture in Calgary and similar to the job Maurice has done in Winnipeg, the buy-in from the players is impressive. But Flames GM Brad Treliving knows where his team is on the rebuilding road and while it might be enticing to fast-track the plan, he continues to evaluate his group to make sure he has the long-term pieces in the right fit. The team would like to add a defenceman and will remain open to all trade possibilities. But young key players wont be sacrificed based on where the Flames are positioned in the standings on Mar. 2. Edmonton Oilers General manager Craig MacTavish has faced enough challenges to last 10 lifetimes, but his to-do list is as long as ever as the club braces for another offseason of selling hope. Its hard to imagine the Oilers being quiet in the weeks leading up to deadline, but with three picks in the Top 35 in this Junes draft, MacTavish may wait to do the heavy lifting until the summer. If Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle or another member of the Oilers core is to be included in a game-changing swap, then this type of auction will clearly draw the most action in the off-season. Goaltending and defence are a top priority for the Oilers and another quality centre would help as well. Defenceman Jeff Petry will attract interest on the trade front and could be used in a package to satisfy one of the teams needs, or for another draft pick that the Oilers can use to load up for June. Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork. Jose Sosa Jersey .com) - The Belk Bowl will pit a pair of top-20 teams for the first time in its 13-year history, as the 13th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and 20th-ranked Louisville Cardinals battle at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Dec 30. The matchup is a classic great offense vs. great defense affair, as Georgia boasted the highest scoring offense in the SEC and Louisville ranked sixth in the entire country in total defense. Georgia has had a month to dwell on its last regular season game, and the Bulldogs still probably have a bad taste in their mouth about it. Even though the possibility of reaching the SEC title game was out of reach, the Bulldogs still had a chance at upending in-state rival Georgia Tech. A touchdown with 18 seconds left in regulation gave Georgia the lead, but an improbable Yellow Jackets field goal forced overtime. Georgia Tech scored a touchdown in OT, and Hutson Mason was intercepted on the ensuing series to end the 30-24 heartbreaking loss. The interception was Masons final throw at Sanford Stadium, spoiling an otherwise terrific season that saw the senior lead a prolific offense. The architect behind the attack, coordinator Mike Bobo, was named Colorado States head coach last week and will not be coaching in the bowl game. His duties will be taken over by Will Friend, head coach Mark Richt said. Mason completed 67.9 percent of his passes for 2,019 yards with 20 touchdowns to just four interceptions. His 154.8 passer rating ranked second in the SEC. He accumulated those numbers without having a go-to receiving, as Michael Bennetts 35 catches led the team. Chris Conley recorded a team-high 577 yards and seven touchdowns on 32 receptions, and six other players caught at least 10 passes. The running game is where Georgia really shined, as it gained 3,060 yards and 35 TDs on the ground. Nick Chubb was a phenomenal fill-in for Todd Gurley, whose Heisman campaign was derailed when he was suspended four games for accepting cash for autographed memorabilia. Gurley amassed a stunning 794 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in five games before being suspended, then gashed Auburn for 138 yards and a score upon his return. He tore his ACL during Georgias signature win, and Chubb took over the backfield duties for good. The Bulldogs did not miss a beat with the freshman toting the rock, as Chubb gained 1,326 yards and 12 touchdowns while earning a 6.9 ypc average. He was named to the All-SEC First Team. Georgias defense often gets overlooked with the offense hogging the headlines, but the Bulldogs unit held opponents to 21.2 ppg and just 334 ypg. Three Georgia defenders were named to the All-SEC Second Team, including linebackers Amarlo Herrera and Ramik Wilson. The duo totaled 112 and 102 tackles, respectively, with a combined four sacks. Defensive back Damian Swann made the Second Team on the strength of three interceptions, four forced fumbles and 62 tackles. The Bulldogs have played in a bowl game 17 straight years and are 27-19-3 in the postseason. They lost to Nebraska in last years Gator Bowl. Ten wins is something to be proud of, although its not what we wanted to accomplish, Mason said. This is where were at so lets go 10-3 and not 9-4 and lets finish the season off right. While Georgia may not have lived up to expectations, the Cardinals first year in the ACC can be seen as a success. The program welcomed back embattled head coach Bobby Petrino despite his tumultuous departure from the school eight years ago. Petrino, always a winner at the college level, guided the Cardinals to a 9-3 record and a 5-3 mark in conference play -- good for third place in the Atlantic Division. Louisville, which was not ranked in the preseason polls, won its final three regular season games despite a change at quarterback. Reggie Bonnafon took over for injured starter Will Gardner and went 4-1 as a starter, but he too, went down with a knee injury in the regular season finale against Kentucky. The freshman was so-so throwing the ball and tossed for only five touchdowns with three interceptions on 51.3 percent efficiency. He did show duel-threat ability with five rushing scores, however. Redshirt freshman Kyle Bolin will start in Bonnafons place if he does not recover in time from a bone bruise in his left knee. On the ground, the Cardinals got the most out of sophomore Brandon Radcliff, who amassed 648 yards and 11 touchdowns. He and Michael Dyer each average over 50 ypg on the ground. Bonnafon had the luxury of throwing to one of the nations premier wideouts in DeVante Parker. The extremely talented senior missed the first half of the season with a foot injury but has made up for lost time with 35 catches for 735 yards and five touchdowns in five games. Defensively the Cardinals have been stellar, allowing just 20.5 ppg and only 293.2 ypg to opponents. They are especially good against the run, limiting teams to 93.7 rushing ypg having given up just nine ground scores all season long. Gerod Holliman tied the NCAA record for interceptions in a season with 14 and won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nations top defensive back. While Holliman locks down the secondary, the Cardinals know stopping Georgias running game is of the utmost importance. Its going to be one of the toughest (tests), linebacker Keith Kelsey said. Theyve got good running backs and good running game. Georgia is just a physical team. Weve got to put on our pads and go after it every play. Louisville is 9-8-1 in the postseason and lost the 2011 Belk Bowl to NC State. A win would give the Cardinals 10 wins for the third straight year. We want to get to 10 wins, Petrino said. The 21-year-old Kingsbury is the reigning world champion, but the 26-year-old Bilodeau comes to Sochi having won each of the last three events. "I feel great. Ive worked hard," Bilodeau said. "The work is done and Im just trying to enjoy the moment. Its my last Olympic experience and its so fun. Each time Im here I feel like I want to be here forever." DETROIT – Randy Carlyle made sure he was being asked about James Reimer after a one-goal loss in Detroit, pausing before he offered an assessment of the now 26-year-old understudy. Sergio Gomez Jersey . “I thought he was okay, you know, just okay,” said Carlyle with a tone of evident frustration after a 3-2 defeat to the injury-riddled Red Wings squad, the Leafs third in the past four games. Long a point of stability this season Toronto goaltending has suddenly been thrown into question with Carlyles remarks, Reimers performance and the uncertain status of injured no. 1 Jonathan Bernier. Starting in place of Bernier for the second straight game – his fourth consecutive appearance – Reimer allowed three goals on 31 shots, including a game-sealing squeaker under the left arm from Daniel Alfredsson with the Leafs down one in the final minutes of regulation. It was the kind of stop Bernier has made routinely this season, one that Reimer needed to make at that point in the game and perhaps what soured Carlyle most afterward, Torontos comeback attempt ultimately falling short. “So he said I was just okay,” said Reimer, responding to Carlyles comments. “I thought I played good, but obviously youd like to make at least one of those saves in the third.” Such blunt discontent was certainly out of character for Carlyle, who rarely, if ever, singles out any one player, even under the most obvious of circumstances. He was surely agitated by the loss – which saw the Leafs drop further behind Tampa and Montreal in the race for second in the Atlantic – unhappy with the officiating and displeased with a schedule that has his club right back at it Wednesday following 10 long days on the road. To land Reimer in the cross-hairs though on this night was unfair. His team started slowly opposite a Detroit squad that was missing a slew of key components, including Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. They also suffered breakdowns – Tim Gleason and Paul Ranger both caught flat-footed at the offensive blue-line – that led to Nyquists two breakaways, while also managing just two goals for the third time in four games (all losses). Whatever his motivation the remarks wont help a sketchy dynamic between coach and player, one that includes a very public stare-down from Reimer in the first period of a loss to these same Red Wings on Dec. 21. Further inflaming the matter afterward were the words of Reimers agent and close friend Ray Petkau, who tweeted, "As is customary in Toronto, when your team plays poor defensively game after game you blame your goalie." Petkau later said the tweet was not in response to Carlyles comments. Doubted and dissected often throughout his Toronto tenure and a restricted free agent to be in the summer of 2014, Reimer will probably use this latest bit of critique as motivation and for the Leafs that may be a good thing. Bernier remains out for the foreseeable future (more on that in Five Points) leaving Reimer as the go-to guy in goal with key division battles ahead against the Lightning and Canadiens. They need him to regain the form he showed last year and displayed recently in relief against the Kings, a brilliant performance that saw him turn aside all 31 shots he faced in an impressive road win. “I dont know if I was great and I would like to be great, but I thought I made some good saves when I needed to,” Reimer concluded of his evening. “Unfortunately at the end, especially that third one, you want to come and make a big save for your team there. Unfortunately wasnt the case tonight.” Five Points 1. Kessel Cools Off Cooling off from an unsustainably scorching stretch that saw him post 31 points in a 17-game span, Phil Kessel had seven shots and was a force against the Red Wings, but ultimately went point-less for the fourth straight game and sixth time in the past eight. Its the fifth time this season that the 26-year-old has gone three games or more without a point. The Leafs are now 6-19-2 on such occasions, two of those wins coming in recent weeks against the Flyers and Kings. Chasing the first 40-goal season of his NHL career – he has 34 currently – Kessel has just one goal in the past eight games. James van Riemsdyk, who thrived through a recent stretch of 11 goals and 21 points in 17 games, has also cooled some, snapping a seven-game drought with the late marker in Detroit. The Leafs have leaned heavily on their top line – which also includes Tyler Bozak – for offence, needing the likes of Nazem Kadri (two goals in the past 13 games), Joffrey Lupul (two goals in the past 13), David Clarkson (one in the past 22) and Mason Raymond (the hottest of the group with six in the past 15) to chip in regularly for support. Aside from the odd contribution, however, theyve not done so consistently. Toronto forwards were responsible for only five goals (of 12) during the five-game road trip. 2. Road Trip A road trip that began with so much promise for the Leafs – following wins in Anaheim and Los Angeles – soured at the end with losses in Washington and Detroit. Toronto finishes the season-long swing with a 2-3-0 mark, not bad, but hardly desirable. “I wouldnt call it a success,” said Jake Gardiner, who scored for the fourth time in the past six games. “We were thinking three out of five wouldve been good. Two of five is okay. Games on the road are always tough, something we have to move on from.” “This game and the last game I dont think that we played as well as we have been playing or can play so thats the negative about it,” said Carlyle. “But we battled back, we didnt quit, we found a way to get two goals tonight and make a game of it. Flush this and get ready for tomorrow.” The Leafs have played two more games than the Lightning, whom they host Wednesday, and trail them by a point. They sit three back of the Canadiens, whom they face at home on Saturday. 3. Wearing Down? Second and third among Toronto forwards in ice-time this season and both key members of Team USA at the Sochi Olympics, one might be led to wonder whether Kessel and van Riemsdyk are simply wearing down at this late stage in the season. Both have seen their ice-time rise (slightly) in March as the Leafs trend toward an 11-forward, seven-defender lineup. Kessel, who had a second period breakaway attempt stopped by Jimmy Howard, actually entered the night as the team-leader in ice-time this month, averaging more than 22 minutes. van Riemsdyk was just a touch behind at nearly 22 himself. “Its been very demanding,” said Carlyle of the schedule and its effects on playing time. “Its the first time in my career that you go out on a 10-day road trip and you come back and youve got to play back-to-back at home with your first game back. I dont know where that one comes from.” van Riemsdyk led all Toronto forwards this night with more than 22 minutes, Kessel a shade behind with just under 21, including exactly nine minutes in the third. Carlyle employed eight forwards for most of that final frame as the Leafs looked to even the score. 4. Bernier Status Nursing a groin injury, Bernier remained off the ice for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday. He then missed his second straight game in Detroit and will sit out again at home on Wednesday when the Leafs host the Lightning. With a likely day off for the team on Thursday, his status for the weekend also appears in real doubt with a back-to-back looming against the Canadiens and Devils. That would mean a return next week at the earliest, all of which ups the pressure on Reimer to perform. “Theres always going to be that push to get your people back,” said Carlyle ahead of a tilt against the Red Wings. “Bottom line is the player makes the decision. All we can do is treat him medically, provide him with the right environment, give him the opportunity to test his injury if hes good enough to go and well make the decision based upon input from him the player.” Though hes split each and every back-to-back set between his two goaltenders this season, Carlyle would be hard-pressed to not come back with Reimer on Wednesday even in light of Tuesdays circumstance. Though hes enjoyed a fine season with the Marlies, Drew MacIntyre has yet to start an NHL game. 5. Phaneuf Scare Upended by the stick of David Legwand in the final frame of Tuesdays affair, Dion Phaneuf remained down on the ice before quickly departing for the Toronto dressing room. He returned to the bench a few moments later, chirping at ref Dan OHalloran for the non-call on Legwand. “Theres no point in talking about it,” said Phaneuf afterward. “It wasnt a slew foot, it was actually a stick, but its done and over with.” The Leafs captain said he had the wind knocked out of him on the play. He still managed to lead his team with more than 23 minutes on this night. Charlotte took a big step on Wednesday night with Jefferson scoring 35 points and Kemba Walker adding a double-double in a 116-111 overtime victory over the Brooklyn Nets. The win pulled the Bobcats within 1/2 games of sixth-seeded Washington, which lost Wednesday night to Phoenix, and three games behind the fifth-seeded Nets. "I think if we continue to win games everything will take care of itself, everything will work out," Jefferson said. "At this point we should be happy and blessed to be in any (playoff) spot." LONDON -- Swedish hockey star Nicklas Backstrom will receive an Olympic silver medal even though he was suspended from the final in Sochi after a positive drug test. Buy Air Max Plus . The International Olympic Committee ruled Friday that Backstrom had not intended to enhance his performance, laying the blame for his positive test for pseudoephedrine on the Swedish team doctor. The Washington Capitals centre was suspended and pulled from the team just hours before the Feb. 23 gold-medal game, which Sweden lost 3-0 to Canada. The Swedes were outraged by the timing of the decision and said it affected the teams performance. The IOC defended the suspension, saying it was "fully justified" because of the positive test and noting that Backstrom conceded also taking the allergy medication on the day of the final. But the IOC ruled that the player should not be kicked out of the Sochi Games altogether, citing "mitigating circumstances." "There was no indication of any intent of the athlete to improve his performance by taking a prohibited substance," the IOCs three-person disciplinary commission said. "As a consequence, the athlete is entitled to receive the silver medal and diploma awarded in respect of the mens ice hockey event." Backstrom tested positive for excess levels of pseudoephedrine after Swedens win over Slovenia in the quarter-finals on Feb. 19. He said the stimulant was contained in "Zytec-D," a medication he had been taking for allergies. The IOC said the positive result in the "A" sample was confirmed on the morning of Feb. 23. A hearing with Backstrom and Swedish team officials was quickly assembled. Among those attending was Bjorn Waldeback, the Swedish hockey team doctor and chief medical officer of the Swedish Olympic Committee. The IOC said Backstrom had "nothing to hide" and explained he had been taking the allergy medication regularly for seven years on the advice of a doctor and had never produced a positive test. He said he had taken the medication earlier that day. The IOC said Backstrom told the panel he knew the medication contained pseudoephedrine but relied on Waldebacks advice that the dosage would not trigger a positive test. Waldeback said he was "at fault" for that advice. Backstroms backup "B" sample was tested later on Feb. 23 and also came back positive. The IOC ruled that Backstrom committed an anti-doping violation by having the banned substance in his system. But the panel said he had been "open and co-operative," had disclosed the medication on his doping control form and had relied on Waldebacks advice. The IOC ruled that Waldeback "made a serious error" by telling Backstrom his use of the medication would not result in a positive test. If the doctor applies for Olympic accreditation in the future, the IOC should "seriously consider" his role in the case, the panel said. For the first time in more than 30 years, Canada officially has a medal drought at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Gary Roberts Jersey . Canada dropped the bronze medal game to Russia by a score of 2-1 on Sunday, marking the first time it has failed to win a medal in back-to-back tournaments since the Program of Excellences inception in 1982. Russia stormed out to an early 2-0 lead over Canada on Sunday thanks to first period goals from Mikhail Grigorenko and Eduard Gimatov. It would provide the basis for a lead Russia would never surrender. Canada would get on the board mid-way through the third with defenceman Josh Morrissey giving the Canadian team some life, but it would not be enough as the Russians would beat Canada to claim bronze for a second straight year. Andrei Vasilevski turned away 28 of the 29 shots Canada threw at him on Sunday, improving his all-time World Junior record to 11-4 over the course of three tournaments. He was named Russias Player of the Game. Aaron Ekblad was named Canadas Player of the Game. Canadian goalkeeper Zach Fucale took over as starter after Canadas preliminary round loss to the Czech Republic and stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced in the semifinal. "In this particular game you could make a case that Team Canada deserved a better fate but in the bigger picture of where they finished in the tournament I dont think you could say they deserved anything more than what they got, which is a fourth-place finish," TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie said. "In a difficult game to play, they had more emotion, they had more commitment and more chances to score and generated a lot more than they did in the semifinals against Finland, where they generated only three shots in the third period," McKenzie added. The tournament also saw head coach Brent Sutters perfect World Junior record shattered after Canada lost its preliminary round game to the Czech Republic 5-4 in a shootout. Sutter had gone 6-0 and won gold in both his previous coaching tenures in the 2005 tournament in Vancouver and Kelowna and the 2006 tournament in Grand Forks, North Dakota. McKenzie believes Canadas troubles may have less to do with Canadas on-ice personnel and more to do with the mental approach the team takes to the high-profile competition, especially the knockout games. On the heels of their upset victory in Montreal last week, Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Tim Burke admits his team will have to play even better in Week 17 if they hope to string together consecutive wins for the first time since August 2011. Air Max Saldi . But the truth is, with eight players on the one-game injured list and another 11 on the nine-game — including nearly a dozen starters — the 3-12 Blue and Gold are more so concentrating on roster development as they re-build for 2014. One of the young players that has taken full advantage of his new starting role is running back Will Ford, who has shown marked improvement game to game since being plugged into the starting role for the injured Chad Simpson. But since his first career start in early September, the 26-year-old has turned the corner. Burke says Ford "did a great job blocking" in Montreal where the back was often man-on-man with tenacious veteran linebacker Kyries Hebert. Another young player who has impressed Burke is linebacker Ian Wild, who has all but cemented himself into the Blue Bombers plans for next season. "Hes a real good player," said the head coach of his 6-foot 208-pound rookie. "Hes made a lot of plays. Hes versatile, anywhere from long-snapping to ending up in the post playing free safety. Seamus Coleman (Everton) – The eighth member of Evertons team to make the top 50 and the best of them all, according to the panel, as well as a recent award ceremony at Goodison Park. The right back had a superb season for Roberto Martinez, continuing the development that began under David Moyes.  Six goals from defence certainly helps players get attention, but the Irishman was more than just a goal-scorer, defending brilliantly and making intelligent runs to create key overlaps in wide areas. Named on nine ballots, 125 pts. 9. Sergio Aguero (Man City) – The Argentine has now played three full seasons in the Premier League and, probably, the league has yet to see him at his true best. The 25-year-old is a genuine world class star, arguably one of the finest talents to grace English football in years, but his best season in the Premier League remains his first, as he has only started 41 games over the last two years. Injuries limited him to starting only 19 games this campaign, but his 17 goals show what he could do if he were fit. Rumors continue to swirl that he may go to a Spanish giant this summer, but the Premier League and Manchester City will be desperate for a healthy Kun to play over 30 league games next season. If he does, he could be number one this time next year. Named on 10 ballots, 139 pts. 8. Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) – Another player whose ranking would be much higher if injuries didnt take away a large chunk of his season. The early candidate for player of the season, Ramsey was a magician at the heart of the Gunners midfield, starting 17 of the clubs first 18 league games and scoring eight goals. Arsenal averaged 2.16 points per game during that stretch, however, the Welshman started just two of the last 21 league games and Arsenals points per game average dipped to 1.7. Only 23, Arsenal fans are excited at the prospect of a healthy full season for Ramsey to play alongside Mesut Ozil next year. Named on 11 ballots, 156 pts. 7. Adam Lallana (Southampton) – Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and now Adam Lallana. The noted Southampton academy certainly has produced some excellent youngsters in recent years, but none of them has made Saints fans smile as much as Lallana. Now 25, Southampton has nurtured the midfielder into an English international and the key, central, play-making cog in their system. Lallana doesnt have the pace of any of those other graduates, but he is an excellent distributor who demands the ball in tight quarters and doesnt spend too much time on it, adhering more to the continental model than the English game. Comfortable playing wide, when asked, his lateral movement in those areas helped his game and the clubs attack. Named on 11 ballots, 164 pts. 6. David Silva (Man City) – If the Premier League has been denied of seeing the true, consistent brilliance of Aguero, Man City have certainly made up for it with David Silvas displays each week. No player in the league has more elegance than the Spanish wizard who is the driver behind the tempo and movement of Citys passing moves. Silva, quite simply, has made City better, showing them how to pass and move, create angles and drift across the field to bring in attacking full backs to provide width. All of his skills ensured he absolutely dominated Manchester United at Old Trafford and then carried City on his back during their comeback at Anfield in the second half. If he scored more goals, you could be looking at the real player of the season, but it is not as if City needs more goalscorers. Named on 13 ballots, 213 pts. 5. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool) – The Liverpool skipper has one act left in the drama that has been the 2013/14 season. Cruelly, if Man City win the league on Sunday, the image for many, of his campaign will be the slip in the middle of Anfield against Chelsea. What shouldnt be forgotten, however, is how he adapted to a deeper role, making many sensational passes from deep areas. There were far too many to name, but the one to Daniel Sturridge at Fulham with the outside of his foot was sensational, as was the one to Luis Suarez that helped win them a penalty at West Ham. Gerrard was brilliant from set-pieces and the spot too, scoring crucial goals to build the momentum late in the season, including ones at Old Trafford and the winner in the final minute at Fulham. Named on all 14 ballots, and as high as third by three members, 234 pts. 4. Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool) – There are many faces at Anfield standing for something. Sturridge, signed in January of 2013, is the face of the Rodgers Revolution, one that really kicked into high gear once Chelsea accepted 12 million pounds for the forward. The 24-year-old is the only Englishman, other than Wayne Rooney, to score 20 PL goals in a season since 2010 and one of his best came back in August against Aston Villa that showed his all-around qualities, drifting out to the wing before picking his moment to run into the box.  He then showed tremendous ball control, dancing around the defenders before looping the ball over Brad Guzan in the Villa goal. It was an outstanding goal helped by teammates who didnt touch the ball and one that rightfully got his manager off his seat to applaud. Rodgers was full of praise, afterwards, for his striker and didnt stop short at a bold prediction: "I think he can be one of the top scorers in the league this year." He was right. Named on all 14 ballots, and second on two, 265 pts. 3. Eden Hazard (Chelsea) – The Belgian ends the season in hot water with his boss, dropped against Norwich, after he called out Jose Mourinhos style in the Champions League semi-final loss, but the truth is Hazards brilliance arrived at Stamford Bridge much earlier than the talent needed to assemble around him. He is far from the finished article, occasionally losing concentration defensively on his flank, not taking over games as his talent should dictate, instead waiting for the conditions of the game to allow him to get involved, rather than vice-versa. However, Chelsea need Hazard as much as he needs them and it will be interesting to see how Mourinho goes about massaging his ego over the next few months. Without any good strikers this season, the creativity for Chelsea fell on the shoulders of the trio in behind them and Hazard is far better than the rest in that position, even though Oscar and Willian have showed great promise. Named on 13 ballots, and second on two, 266 pts. 2. Yaya Toure (Man City) – There is no footballer in the world that is like the Ivorian. That doesnt make him the best, but it does mean it is extra special to watch the power and dominance he exudes from the midfield position. There are few better sights in the league than his surging runs from deep, gliding past terrified defenders. The former Barcelona man has been playing at a world class level for a number of seasons now, but elevated his level this season, becoming just the second central midfielder (Frank Lampard was the other) to score 20 Premier League goals in a season.
